1. Hope is not a strategy. Define what it is you want with precision and certainty. When one bowls they go for the pocket to get a strike. In darts it’s going for a certain number or the bullseye. In golf it’s to put the ball in the hole. On our little pirate ship it’s the X marks the spot on the treasure map. The target or goal never changes, never moves. Focus on it as often as possible.
2. Stay out of the results and outcomes department. Stay in the action department. And remember, if there are 3 frogs on a log and one decides to jump in the water, there are still 3 frogs on the log. Deciding to take action and taking action are world’s apart.
3. Evaluate the results of the actions regularly. Do they move you towards the goal or objective? Be sure to notice what doesn’t work. We don’t want to continue to waste time and energy on things that don’t work. Caution: Some actions will require a little patience. Something that has not worked yet is different than something that does not work. Relationships with others is a fine example.
4. Flexibility. There are many courses, routes, trajectories that one can take to get to the X-Marks-The-Spot. Some are very direct and others have a torturous mean free path. Look up the story of Thomas Edison and what it took to come up with the now almost obsolete incandescent light bulb. That dude had one precise objective of a long duration lightbulb.
My voyage has been and continues to be very interesting, challenging, stretching, and rewarding. Watch some of the things I will do this year using these simple 4 steps.
