a figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally applicable. A fine and painful example would be “I felt like he stabbed me in the back”. An entrepreneur might say something like “I’ve come this far and I have hit a wall” and get frustrated and stuck unless that person knows that they can go over, under, or around the wall, or even through it by putting a door into it.
