The feeling of being overwhelmed is quite nasty. It leaves you with feelings of fear, exhaustion, being out of control, and/or helpless. But did you know that this feeling is actually an emotional messenger and brings with it clear direction for next steps? It’s like a yellow or red warning light on the dashboard of your car telling you that something needs attention.
The message being delivered by overwhelm is that “you are doing too much, too fast”. The call to action is to sort out priorities and refocus your attentions. Sometimes I like to knock out a few lower priority items to reduce the “clutter”. This allows me to give more time and attention to the higher priority items.
Another tool in the Call to Action tool box is to ask a few simple questions: 1)How important is this really? 2) If it does not get done right now will the world come to an end? 3) Is it time to take a break of some kind? (Nap, snack, a walk or a run, helping someone else out)
