Back in the 1990’s I had an engineer that would perform analysis and write the results up in reports. I would review and take a red pen and redline these reports. One day I reviewed a report and I got to the end and realized that there were no redlines at all; the report was perfect. I went down to her office and tossed it on her desk and said in a stern voice explain what’s wrong here. She looks puzzled, picks it up and looks through the pages and finally concludes “there are no redlines”. Again in a stern voice I say explain why not. She gets a huge grin and turns around to her credenza and pulls out the bottom drawer and removes a thick folder with every redlined report from the last.
There was never a redline after that. This lady became an excellent manager in later years.
