In the 1980’s-1990’s I used to drive from the San Fernando Valley through Lancaster on F-Street to Edwards Air Force Base to work on rocket engines abs launch programs. F-Street was a long 2-lane straightaway through the desert and many a person (including myself) would put the “pedal to the metal”. 125+ was pretty typical. Now my recollection is was that there was a telephone/power pole about every 1/4 mile and I was always astonished to see how many cars would wreck into these sparsely located poles with so much open space to avoid them. Many years later I learned from a friend who races why these wrecks happened. On the race track drivers learn that their subconscious will steer the car in the direction of their focus, and when they lose control of the race car they are focusing on avoiding the wall and therefore crash into the wall. What they are taught to focus on instead is the open track and infield. We can apply this in life… instead of focusing on our fears and the things we do not want we must focus instead on what we do want. In coaching we call this “moving towards” focus (or language, or values)rather than “moving away from”. Move towards where you want to be.
