Among many well-knowns, both Plato and Benjamin Franklin wrote about the value of taking inventory, the latter had a simple process of drawing a line down the middle of the page and then writing down all the “negative” features on the left and the “positive” features on the right. The balance of power was then there before him in his own indisputable writing. He was made aware. This awareness aided him to make an emotion free decision by removing the bias of thinking which was holding back his decision. This simple process is the “Benjamin Franklin Inventory”. Every business owner and manager will know the value of inventory knowledge for their business. It is highly related to accounts payable and accounts receivable. It is the same for people in human relationships.
In my coaching I never use right or wrong, negative or positive, I always use empowerment or disempowerment. I ascribe to the belief that if everything that happens to you is really a clue in this Ultimate Escape Room, and is actually “for you” to help you move forward, then these seemingly negative features, emotions, or experiences are really just clues, messengers or road signs to help you, they are like the red lights on the dashboard of your car telling you that something needs to be fixed, they make you aware. Take a look around you and be aware.
“Awareness is a key ingredient in success. If you have it, teach it, if you lack it, seek it.” Michael B. Kitson
