Focus is very, very powerful. Yesterday I was focused on many things, many of them were rather unpleasant, and some had a deadline. Bottom line was about 9:45 PM I was reminded it was my son’s 18th birthday. And at one point in the afternoon after school he even reminded me about an appointment I had today that is associated with his birthday. My brain was totally elsewhere. Yep, Bad Dad first degree, especially since my birthday was just a few days ago and he made a big deal about it.
Excuses aside, because there are none, what could I have done differently, what could I have done better, what tools have I recently taught that I could have employed myself? Well I tell you what. I had to pause when agitated a number of times. I moved around. I discussed my feelings with my COO. I took time to eat. All the while my focus never left what was needed to be done. Well, I could have put that important event on my Work Calendar because I look at that all the time.
At the end of the day I said Happy Birthday and apologized. Epic failure.
Why write this personal failure public? Leverage. The pain of failing will be a reminder. My brain will do the rest. Something to think about.
