The imagination has incredible power and potential. Many of the things I have worried would happen never did, and many of the things I dreamed about as a kid (and still do as an adult) have. All the things that did and did not happen were all products of my imagination.
Many imaginative thoughts are merely constructs of the brain in it’s unrelenting effort to be right, to be perfect. The brain takes little pieces of disparate information and joins them together using imagination as the glue to complete the picture. Our brain literally employs this stitching process with our “binocular vision”, interpolating and stitching the imagery between our two eyes where our nose makes an obscuration in the image to give us a complete and continuous picture. Look it up if you do not believe me. There are numerous optical illusions and tricks that demonstrate this.
Some of these thought based stitching of information, let’s call them what they are – hallucinations, can be quite destructive. I point this out for you to notice the next time you feel negative about a person, place or thing.
But right now I want to point out the power of the imagination for good and how you can even amplify that power enormously. The tool to do that is COMMITMENT. The combination of IMAGINATION + COMMITMENT = IMPACT
This equation really works. There are many examples of people who had a dream and were committed to it and were impactful for the good (e.g., Dr.s Martin Luther King and MLK Jr.)
Unfortunately the equation also works for evil (e.g., Adolf Hitler). All around us today we see many examples of the wrong use of the power of imagination and commitment for evil… it is easy to see and those who perpetrate it know they do it by the fear and anger they feel.
I want to end this blog on a high note, calling out for others to be impactful for good. Today I want to encourage all who read this to imagine something good, big or small, that could happen if you were committed to seeing it through to completion, and then decide and take the action to do it. And when it has been done I want you to notice how it feels.
