What’s in the closet? The closet I’m referring to is the one inside your head. If I were to ask you the question what is your favorite memory what would you say? The first thing that happens is that some of you will repeat the question one or more times. The next thing that happens is that most of you will start to “reference” your memories. Some of you will have the “belief” that you have more than one favorite, that you couldn’t possibly pick one, that picking one might damage the others. Some persons may not want to take that deep dive into the past because of painful experiences, they will see no “value” in exploring the past at all. I have had some clients with memories so painful that they simply are unable to access them in a single session, the trauma is that great.
The way all of us access the closet is determined by our evaluation system. It determines how, what, and especially what we are even willing to look at in the closet, and can even prevent us from opening the door.
